Aeronautics Turin: aviation and the great sporting events
Turin, capital of Italy till 1864, has a century-old industrial tradition: her industries are famous world-wide (automotive, specialised carriage work, aviation and space, precision, tooling machinery, electronics, fine gastronomy etc.).
Turin is a leader in Italy in research and innovation with investments more than double the Italian average.
Aviation was born in Turin and developed there from the beginning. The first powered flight in Italy, performed by the Frenchman, Leon DeLagrange, was organised in Turin, the first Italian city to invite the pilot.
Out of respect for the King of Italy, they wanted to make the first flight in Rome and then Turin.
Turin saw the flight of the first aircraft (body and engine) constructed entirely in Italy.
In January 1909, Mario Faccioli made the first flight in Italy from the field at Venaria Reale.
He was the son of the aircraft’s designer, the engineer Aristide Faccioli.
Between 1909 and 1913, many aeronautical enterprises were founded in Turin: Dr. Fuseri’s Fabbrica Italiana Macchine volanti (Italian Flying Machine Factory), the Miller company, Chiribiri, Bobba, SIT (ItalianTransair Society), Asteria and aero-engine factories: FIAT, LUCT, Garuffa, FIMA, Bertolotti SPA.
In 1915, the aero-engine production lines employed 24.000 workers!
In 1912, the Aeroclub Torino Flying School (known at that time as APIA) licensed seven pilots.
Turin’s aviation history is long, from the first Italian commercial flight (Turin - Trieste, by hydroplane to the first flight of the national airline LAI (later evolved into Alitalia), to the aeronautical designers Rosatelli, Gabrielli, etc. of world renown.
Turin’s aviation future is brilliant, with the companies Alenia Aeronautica and Thales Alenia Space (Finmeccanica Group), the Aerospace District (with over 50 design, production and aeronautical maintenance companies), the Polytechnic, the Pegasus network and many others.
Turin boasts a continuous and winning tradition in organising important international sporting events.
In recent years, the city has hosted the World Championships in numerous Sports (from soccer to skiing), International athletics, golf and canoeing meets and in 2006 and 2007, the XX Winter Olympic Games, the World Fencing Championships and the University Winter Games.
Across the years, the best professional skills have been developed in Turin, and service companies capable of organising big international events, from technical support to logistics.
But, above all, Turin has developed the capacity to bring together private and public sectors on common projects, a characteristic essential to the successful organisation of such complex events.
Turin has big, efficient sports and service structures available, recently enlarged and improved for the Olympic Games.
The television and telecommunications infrastructures are world class, from the biggest European Teleport for satellite connections with the five continents, to video production companies, to digital connection systems. (Tetra). RAI (Italian television and radio) and TELECOM were born in Turin.
