World Air Games Turin 2009 -
The disciplines: paragliders
History
Even more basic and simple than the hang-glider, the Paraglider has taken its place and is growing in popularity for its greater flexibility, becoming a sporting discipline practised by a large number of participants.
The Competitions
Synchronised aerobatic flight
This event will be at Avigliana (12 km in a straight line from the principal contest sites in Turin.) above the larger of the two lakes. The paragliders will be winched up to their operating height.
The lake is also usually used by pleasure craft and for waterskiing with motorboats.
Being flat and obstacle-free, the area offers ample space for landing on the edge of the lake (or alternatively, on a floating platform), in front of the public stands and grassed seating area, which will be contained by security barriers.
The contest site is normally very calm, sheltered and not normally subject to strong winds.
Individual flight
This event, which lasts around three hours, uses the same contest area previously described.
Precision landing
The competition sets off from the mountains overlooking Lake Avigliana, near the historically famous Benedictine Abbey of Saint Michael (Sacra di San Michele).
The launch area is situated at 1100 mt. Above mean sea level.
The landing area is a totally flat space without obstacles positioned at 350 meters above mean sea level on the banks of the lake or on a floating platform in front of the public stands and grass seating, protected by security barriers.
The airspace overhead is free of aeronautical restrictions.
Organisating ability and experience
The Aero Club di Torino is happy to be collaborating with the FIVL (Federazione Italiana del Volo Libero) which has been organising national and international Hang-glider and Paraglider competitions for 30 years.
In particular, as regards the choice of the contest sites and areas, they have had the benefit of technical advice from Mr. Franco Laverdino (World Champion Hang-glider team event 2002- 2004, European Champion, team event, 2002, racing competitor in the individual European Championship, and twice individual champion of Italy) and Angelo Crapanzano, who has developed the GAP scoring system GAP adopted by the FAI in official competitions.
Test Event
From 18th to 20th August 2008, an open national event is planned as a World Air Games 2009 test event and will take place at Avigliana.
