World Air Games Turin 2009 -
The disciplines: parachuting
History
Falling. The desire to possess a suitable means of slowing the fall doubtless arose, at the time when man was only dreaming of flying. The development and use ofthe parachute were fully put into practice once man had invented the machines to fly, first the balloon and then the aeroplane.
The first records connected with the use of a system of slowing free fall go back to 1797 to Jacques Guarnerin.
Parachuting – Rules
Within theambit of the FAI, the organ which regulates parachuting is the specialist commission (IPC) which embraces various, specialist sub-committees and one which controls the judges.
The judging system varies between the various specialities, all of which have judges supported by video or electronic systems. Principally, the judge serves to verify the correctness of the performance; in some specialities, the judgement has, as in other sports, both a technical and an artistic component.
Parachuting - Commission
The specialist commission of the FAI is the IPC (International Parachuting Commission).
The Sporting Commission of the World Air Games 2009 for Parachuting is composed of:
Angelo Moriondo (Chairman)
Pierluigi Duranti (Deputy)
Roberto Lomonaco (Air Sport Director) Parachute instructor, Director of a Parachute School, 22 years of activity + 8000 jumps, counsellor for five years of the Association of Parachute Instructors, organiser of Italian Championships, jump plane pilot.
All the competitions will take place at the Torino Aeritalia airport.
Parachute competitions are divided into 5 different specialities:
FORMATION SKYDIVING
Scores are built up over 8 jumps per team, plus one more for the finals if qualified, from which the winner in each class will emerge.
One parachutist, called the camera flyer, will film the 4 athletes creating the pre-assigned figures. Thanks to the maxi-screens, it will be possible to admire the jumps and later, check the scores awarded by the judges.
PRECISION LANDING (ACCURACY)
Scored during 7 jumps per athlete, plus one more if qualified for the finals, from which the winner in each class will emerge.
The competitors must land as close as possible to the target: a disc on the ground with electronic sensors.
A 10-seater aircraft carries the athletes to around 1,000 meters from where they jump in groups of 5.
 OPEN CANOPY WORK (CANOPY FORMATION)
Based on 6 jumps with one final, four parachutists jump at the same time and open their parachutes immediately at the height of 2,000 mt., performing a series of transformations for a predetermined time, all filmed and transmitted to the ground by a fifth parachutist alongside.
These images will be projected on the Maxiscreens to totally involve the public.
SPEED LANDING (CANOPY PILOTING)
This extremely spectacular speciality, takes 6 jumps, in which the athlete, with the parachute open close to the ground, reaches the maximum horizontal speed, skims the surface of an appropriate body of water and attempts to touch down as far beyond as possible (or on a pre-established point).
The sheet of water created especially for the competition is positioned in front of the spectators but at a little distance (for maximum safety): the spectators will be able to share the competition very intensely.
FREE STYLE
This competition, scored over six jumps and one final one, consists in performing artistic aerobatics: this renders the event extremely elegant.
Each parachutist is accompanied by a video-operator who, apart from capturing the aerobatic sequences, embellishes the show by flying in free fall in all positions.
The Jury express their evaluations on the basis of the images which will be projected onto theMaxi-screens for the total involvement of the public.
A 10 seat aircraft will take theathletes to 4.000 meters from where they will jump in pairs, plus the video operator.
TEST EVENT
From 31st May to 2nd June 2008 at Aero Club Torino.

Free fall, speed in its pure state, this is parachuting, the human body immersed in the air becomes the vector for itself and, in three dimensions, succeeds in accomplishing all sorts of evolutions denied in that daily life which condemns us to keeping our feet on the ground...
