World Air Games Turin 2009 -
The discipline: hang-gliders
History
The hang-glider was developed in the ‘60s as the evolution of the Ragallo wing, invented for the recovery of the space capsule Gemini and, subsequently, offered on the sporting market in the '70s, with an immediate and explosive development.
Competitions
Aerobatics
This event will be seen at Avigliana, (12 Km in a straight line from the main competition site in Turin) over the larger of the two lakes which represent the town.
The hang-gliders will be carried up to their operational altitude by motorised versions.
Landings will be on a floating raft (20x20) right in front of the grandstands and public areas which will be restricted by security fencing.
Slalom
The competition starts from the mountains overlooking the Lake of Avigliana, close to the historically famous Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael (Sacra di San Michele)
The launch area is situated at 1100 mt. above mean sea-level.
The competition is very similar to a Giant Slalom: 6-8 gates are set up to be negotiated and the winner is the one who doesn’t miss any gates and also does the best time.
Landing will again be on the floating platform on the lake, after a finish line over the water and a spectacular 180° turn, right in front of the public stands and lawns, protected by safety barriers. The public will be able to follow the competition on a maxi screen where all the phases of the competition will be projected.
At the halfway stage, there is ample space suitable for the public to follow the competition.
The Aero Club di Torino is happy to be collaborating with the FIVL (Federazione Italiana del Volo Libero) which has been organising national and international Hang-glider and Paraglider competitions for 30 years.
In particular, they have had the benefit of technical advice as regards the choice of the contest sites and areas from Mr. Franco Laverdino (World Champion Hang-glider team event 2002- 2004, European Champion, team event, 2002, racing competitor in the individual European Championship, and twice individual champion of Italy) and Angelo Crapanzano, who has developed the GAP scoring system, adopted by the FAI in official competitions.
TESTE EVENT
From 18th to 20th August 2008, a World Air Games 2009 open national event is planned for these disciplines to be held at Avigliana.

With very few exceptions in the form of hang-gliders with aerodynamic controls, the hang-glider is the only aircraft which, generally, is guided entirely by displacing the pilot’s weight.
